Welcome to the Healthy Thinking Institute Ltd, a private company developed by Doctors and Psychologists addressing one of the world's major, fast growing pandemics - stress, which the World Health Organisation has declared to be one of the top two non-communicable diseases (along with diabetes ) by 2030.
Developed and run by Doctors working in emergency medical, psychological (including occupational and industrial) and psychiatric health, to work with educators and businesses on stress, emotion and attitude-related health, The Healthy Thinking Institute Ltd is committed to prevention and treatment of stress by teaching people to manage their emotions, and attitude development, in unique ways that have developed out of research.
Dr. Tom Mulholland, the founder of The Healthy Thinking Institute Ltd is a medical doctor working in the emergency department of the Auckland Hospital, New Zealand, an honorary lecturer in psychology at the Auckland Medical School and a sought-after, global public speaker on Healthy Thinking, Emotions and how to manage them, The Importance of Attitude in the Workplace, Stress in the Workplace and Creating a Healthy Workplace Culture and Happiness.
Research in various countries in the last ten years has shown figures such as:
- Up to 80% of workers feel stress on the job
- And 65% of those say it has caused difficulties - often with major effects
- Up to 40% of workers claim their own job is very or extremely stressful
- While nearly half believe they need to learn how to avoid stress
- Workplace stress has lead to tears for almost a quarter
- While a third report sleeping problems because they are too stressed-out.
- More than 10% have called in sick from stress
And stress leads directly to many chronic and acute health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure and depression.
Today we can see the links of strong emotions like, fear, anger, sadness, called the broken heart syndrome. These emotions which you can actually die from, effect us more then we realise. However in most cases this is reversible with the right tools and some Healthy Thinking®!
Based on current trends, the World Health Organisation regards Depression as likely to be the World's second largest non-communicable disease (behind, but related to diabetes) by 2030. We must act now to reverse this pattern.
The Healthy Thinking Institute has developed tools to teach emotional and attitudinal management leading to reduced stress. Occupational Psychology Research Associates (OPRA) was approached by the Healthy Thinking Institute in 2007 to independently evaluate the possible benefits of the corporate Healthy Thinking® program.
The results were impressive!
A year after the course was run, 75% of workers thought that Healthy Thinking® had created long term positive behavioural change for them at work. Of these people, 100% thought the change would be permanent!
OPRA also found that 92% of people had found Healthy Thinking® very effective or effective as a tool to improve their relationships at home, while no one had found it NOT effective!
OPRA was so impressed they joined the Institute.
